Kirk Stone - Covenanter preaching site
Kirk Stone - Covenanter preaching site
Comprised of a group of some half-dozen colossal granite boulders of which the Kirk Stone (pictured) is the largest, this would have been a prominent feature on the open hillside prior to the arrival of the forestry. A well chosen location for an open-air conventicle in the troubled times of the late 17th-century; here worshippers could remain hidden whilst keeping a watchful eye for dragoons. This impressive historical site should never have been afforested. The surrounding mature trees are ripe for felling and indeed timber harvesting operations are currently (Aug 2012) in progress nearby. Whilst the removal of the trees will open up the site for the first time in many years, the likelyhood is that the area will be left an unsightly mess with damage to the stones being a possibility. Presently the stones have a certain charm as they are, hidden away in the thick of the forest.
