Thorrington Tide Mill - Flour Sieve
Thorrington Tide Mill - Flour Sieve
Probably the best example of a sieve I have seen. The flour starts off in the left and grades through to produce flour of two levels of coarseness. The divider can be seen to the right on the central wooden post. Flour would be ground ( French Burrs), lifted up an loaded into this machine before a finer grade was sold for a higher price (less bran).
Thorrington Tide Mill
Thorrington tide mill in a 19th century tide mill built on the site of an earlier mill. It was rebuilt in 1831 from the previous structure. There are four floors, three millstones (one steam driven), flour sieve, sack hoist and breastshot wheel. The mill is in need of repair due to an incident a few years ago when the overflowing millpond started the mill, running dry it burnt out several bearings.
It is well worth a look, free entry with informative guides. Open 4th Sunday of the month in summer.
