Thorrington Tide Mill - Stone Nut
One of three stone nuts, as can be seen here the iron stone nut runs against a wooden spur wheel (apple or pear teeth) to reduce noise, fire risk and repair bills.
Thorrington Tide Mill
Thorrington tide mill in a 19th century tide mill built on the site of an earlier mill. It was rebuilt in 1831 from the previous structure. There are four floors, three millstones (one steam driven), flour sieve, sack hoist and breastshot wheel. The mill is in need of repair due to an incident a few years ago when the overflowing millpond started the mill, running dry it burnt out several bearings.
It is well worth a look, free entry with informative guides. Open 4th Sunday of the month in summer.
