TR0916 : The new lighthouse at Dungeness
taken 12 years ago, 3 km from Lydd-on-Sea, Kent, England
The new lighthouse at Dungeness
There cannot be anywhere else in Britain like Dungeness. It is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world. This view from the boardwalk which has been laid across the shingle looks to the current lighthouse. This is the most recent of five and dates from 1961. The prominent plant on the stones here is sea kale (sometimes known as sea cabbage) which can be seen everywhere on the inhospitable stones of the Dungeness beaches. It has large fleshy cabbage-like leaves, produces small white flowers and later on characteristic seed pods. These float on sea water and assist in its dispersal. A long tap root keeps it stable in shingle and enables it to obtain water from as deep as six metres.
