Ramped end of York Promenade
Ramped end of York Promenade
The York Promenade was laid out by the Borough Engineer, William Louis de Normanville, in 1891. It linked the New River Walk to the Pump Room Gardens via York footbridge (approach, centre). At this southeast end de Normanville provided both a flight of steps down to the bridge and a curving ramp to cater for bath chairs and the new-fangled perambulators. Now they are equally useful for pushchairs, wheelchairs, bikes, buggies, skateboards and scooters. Originally, I believe, the banks to either side were entirely grassed but perhaps they were too steep to retain cover. In the 20th century low retaining walls were formed maybe of unlovely materials such as foundry slag but they have stemmed any erosion.
