TQ9818 : Groyne, west of Jury's Gap

taken 12 years ago, 3 km from Camber, East Sussex, England

Groyne, west of Jury's Gap
The coastline here is highly unstable, and groynes have to be renewed fairly frequently. When I was here in 1997 parts of the beach resembled a forest of stakes - where only the uprights of old groynes remained. In this shot the stumpy remains of earlier structures can be seen huddled alongside their more recent replacements.

In recent years more active measures have been taken, and many tons of shingle have been carted westward along the beach in an attempt to counteract erosion.
