Wales and West Utilities initially said that the works would be finished in September, then revised that to later in the autumn. Now the firm has stated that the work is unlikely to be completed till late in the year. A Newport council streetworks report suggests that could be as late as December 21st.

Concerns from traders, many of whom had benefited from recently reintroduced High Street buses (now withdrawn for the duration of the gas works), have led the leader of Newport council to call for the work to be finished as quickly as possible.
