Mons Meg
Mons Meg is a C15th cannon of the type known as a Bombard. It was cast in 1449 it is thought for Philip of Burgundy who then gave it in 1457 as a present to James II of Scotland.
It weighs about 6 tons and fired cannon balls weighing up to 3 hundredweight (175kg)
The cannon has been at Edinburgh Castle for most of its history, though between 1754 and 1829 it resided at the Tower of London. It was returned to Scotland at the instigation of the famed Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott.
It is now to be found on the small courtyard outside St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh Castle.
