Small depressions in the forest are either bomb holes or gravel pits for building local roads and tracks. Given that this is wide and shallow I guess it is a gravel pit, despite being slightly away from the road - perhaps the old track was closer to the line of the path (new roads are made with aggregate brought in from outside)
