Carsington Water - Derbyshire
A view from the Sheepwash bird-watching hide. Note the lack of birds but the sun did shine! A reservoir belonging to Severn Trent Water that offers bird-watching opportunities, sports in the form of sailing and associated water sports and fishing as well as the opportunity to use its tracks for cycling and walking. The reservoir is part of a 'water compensation' scheme that pumps water here from the River Derwent at times of high rainfall to be stored and returned to the Derwent when its level would be too low to allow water extraction for treatment and drinking further downstream. No water is directly extracted from the reservoir for that purpose. It is England's ninth largest reservoir with a capacity of 35,412 megalitres, covers an area of 741 acres and at its deepest is 31 metres when full and together with its Visitor's Centre, was formally opened in 1992.
