A view of a landscape in transition - taken from much the same spot as TQ0410 : Looking south from the Burgh toward Peppering High Barn, and featuring a much-photographed tree: LinkExternal link

Chris Shaw's Geograph, taken nearly seven years earlier, shows a landscape without hedges or fences, and with little cover for wildlife. In recent years all that has changed, in the hands of Peter Knight - who farms the land for the Norfolk Estate LinkExternal link.

One aim, no doubt, was to boost the Estate's partridge population, but enlightened attitudes have meant that the Norfolk Estate now supports birds of prey in numbers which would have been inconceivable almost anywhere in England 20 years ago - and as a consequence Mr Knight and his team are held in high regard by local naturalists.

Not all the species sown along this field margin appear to be native, so I suspect the intention is to provide for small, seed-eating birds (finches and buntings) through the winter.
