Gurney Stove - Ely Cathedral
Gurney Stove - Ely Cathedral
Patented by Goldsworthy Gurney (later Sir) in 1856. Gurney was born in Cornwall in 1793 and after qualifying as a doctor he settled in Cambourne in 1814 where he practised as a surgeon. He moved to London in 1820 to seek his fortune and, as a prototypical British gentleman scientist and inventor of the Victorian period, began developing his interest in engineering and the sciences. In 1825 he patented a steam carriage, before patenting his system of heat recovery from lighting fittings. His interest in heating led him to invent a new type of warm-air stove to improve the warming and moistening of air. The apparatus was described as a metallic vessel having a number of plates extending from its outer surface, standing with the plates vertical in a shallow trough of water. This was significant in attempting to provide humidification to offset the drying of atmospheric moisture caused by warming the air. It was manufactured in three sizes and used extensively in public buildings such as the cathedral. His lifetime of achievements remained unknown and went unacknowledged throughout most of the 1900s possibly because his family line died out. Attention to his many achievements has since been revived and written about with a biography being published in 1998.
