View of old Yelland Power Station site on estuary of R.Taw in N.Devon.
The coal fired power station was opened on the 21st August 1955. Fuel was obtained from coalmines in South Wales and transported across the Bristol Channel by ship to the jetty; seen in the background and which was specially constructed for the power station. Due to the closure of the mines in the 1980s, coal would have been too expensive to obtain from other parts of the country and therefore it was more economic to close the power station. The area is now a favourite place for walkers and birdwatchers.
