The Shell Lady of Margate
The Shell Lady of Margate
There is a small plaque attached to the base of the statue which reads “Mrs Booth. The Shell Lady of Margate. Ann Carrington. 2008”. Mrs Sophie Booth was a widow and the landlady of the artist J M W Turner. Her boarding house was on the site of, what is now, The Turner Contemporary Art Gallery (seen here, to the left of the statue, in the background). It was rumoured that she was also Turner’s mistress LinkExternal link
The designer, of The Shell Lady, Ann Carrington, was the winner, in 2008, of a national competition to produce a major new art work for Margate’s sea front LinkExternal link
