Former railway station, Donaghadee (1979)
See J5979 : Site of Donaghadee station (July 2006). The remains of Donaghadee station 29 years after closure. The photograph shows what had once been the platform which had been covered by an overall roof. There was a second (bay) platform outside the roof behind me to the right. The chimneys of the harbour office J5980 : Dulse for sale, Donaghadee (upper right) can be used for reference. All trace has now gone following the building of the community centre J5979 : Donaghadee Community Centre on the site.
The Belfast and County Down Railway
The Belfast and County Down Railway ran from Queen’s Quay station in Belfast to Castlewellan via Comber, Downpatrick and Newcastle. There were also lines from Comber to Donaghadee via Newtownards, Belfast to Bangor and branches from Ballynahinch Jct to Ballynahinch and Downpatrick to Ardglass. The lines opened between 1848 and 1892. All closed by 1950 except for Castlewellan – Newcastle which survived until 1955 as part of the GNR(I) route from Belfast via Banbridge and the Bangor line which remains open but from Belfast Central.
