NS4279 : Old test pit

Old test pit
Old test pit
A report at WoSAS LinkExternal link mentions a number of features on the moor, including a "millstone quarry" (NS4379 : Old quarry), and a line of four test pits. The present photograph shows the southernmost of those pits; from south to north, the other three are shown in: NS4279 : Old test pit, NS4279 : Old test pit, and NS4279 : Old test pit. What is probably a related spoil mound can be seen not far to the west: NS4279 : Old spoil mound.

For further details of all of these remains, see the WoSAS link given above.

(I should add that there are also lines of bomb craters on the moor, which look similar, at least to me. The identification of the feature shown in the present picture, and similar ones nearby, as test pits is not my own, but is from the WoSAS report, which is probably founded on more experience of these features than my own.)
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
