NS4279 : Test pit or bomb crater

Test pit or bomb crater
Test pit or bomb crater
This is one of a line of four pits that can be seen on this part of the moor; reckoning from south to north, this is the third of the pits. They have been reported as possible test pits (for quarrying). See NS4279 : Test pit or bomb crater for more information, and for related photographs.

The upper end of Nobleston Wood (on Pappert Hill) can be seen in the background. Forming the skyline in the right-hand side of the photograph is a ridge that was formerly used as drove road; for a view along that route, looking back towards the edge of Nobleston Wood, see NS4380 : Hill of Standing Stones - looking along old drove road.

(I should add that there are also lines of bomb craters on the moor, which look similar, at least to me. The identification of the feature shown in the present picture, and similar ones nearby, as test pits is not my own, but is from the WoSAS report see the item for "more information" linked above which is probably founded on more experience of these features than my own.)
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
