Ponies grazing Rockford Common, New Forest
Ponies grazing Rockford Common, New Forest
Two ponies grazing the heath on Rockford Common in late afternoon winter sunshine. The heathland vegetation on the common is a product of centuries of human intervention, through heather burning and cutting and commoning animals such as these ponies. Large parts of the heath on Rockford Common (to the south of here) were scarred by large-scale gravel extraction in the 1960s. In the distance you can see a glimpse of the artificial lakes between the Avon and Ibsley. The conifers on the right are part of Newlands Plantation.
