Sow and sign near the Red Shoot Inn, New Forest
Sow and sign near the Red Shoot Inn, New Forest
This sow is scratching on the wooden post to the left of the sign (positioned to prevent unauthorised vehicle access to the woods) - her single piglet is out of sight behind the bush. The "pannage" season, when commoners are permitted to turn out pigs onto the Forest, ended on 31 December in 2006. Only breeding sows remain now, exercising what is called the "breeding sow's privilege" - an extension granted by the Deputy Surveyor of the Forest.
