Two Brothers, Manners Memorial, Uffington church
The Manners Monument on the south wall of the chancel is for Roger and his brother Olyver. Roger was an esquire of the body of Queen Elizabeth I whose personal attendant he was. He resided at Uffington Manor from 1580 until he died in 1607 and the family later sold the estate to Charles Bertie in 1637.
The inscriptions read:-
“Here lyes Roger Manneres
Esquier to the bodye of Queene
Marye and Queen Elizabethe and
Therd sonne to Thomas late Erle
Of Rutland
Anno domini 1587”

“Here lyes Olyver Manneres
The 5 sonne to the said late
Erle and served our Queene
Elizabeth in her warres at
Newhaven and ther fell sicke
And died of the same sicknes
Anno Domini”

Roger Manners was third son of Thomas Manners (1st Earl of Rutland) and Eleanor Paston. Born about 1535 at Belvoir, he died in Enfield in 1607. He never married neither was he knighted, but was always faithful to Queen Elizabeth I to whom he was an esquire of the body, as he was also for Mary I. It was an arduous task. He was instrumental in obtaining a job for young Bridget Manners at court, and also after her marriage without Royal consent, in helping free her and her husband from prison.

Olyver Manners was the 5th son of Thomas and Eleanor, born around 1540 and died 1563 in Shoreditch.
