Memorial to William Muir
Memorial to William Muir
This stone is in the older part of the kirkyard of NS2684 : Rhu Parish Church. The other side of the stone is rather worn, but its inscription commemorates William Muir, a smith, and his wife, Margaret Turner. The text on this side reads "W.M. / Erected in 1801".

As well as emblems of mortality, the carvings include a crown (top), and some recognisable symbols of the smith's craft. The symbol at the bottom probably represents bellows.

For context, see NS2683 : Rhu Parish Churchyard, where the position of this stone is picked out.
Rhu Parish Church :: NS2684
The present-day church (1851), the third to stand on this site, is by William Spence, with later additions (c.1891) by Honeyman and Keppie; see its listed building report LinkExternal link (at Historic Environment Scotland) for further details. A portion of the wall of the second church (1763) survives in the kirkyard, where it forms part of a memorial to James Buchanan of Craigend Castle.
