NX5061 : Culcronchie

taken 12 years ago, near to Culcronchie, Dumfries And Galloway, Great Britain

This is 1 of 2 images, with title Culcronchie in this square
The house on the hill is Culcronchie. A Gaelic name. Unlike most of the south Gaelic was quite well established in Galloway. Gaelic placenames get fewer the further east you travel, but still occur around the Solway, even in England!

As you travel down the Moneypool Burn towards Creetown, the rough moor grasses give way to improved grassland. This could be due to lower altitude, as well as a change in the underlying geology, from granite to slates which weather to a more fertile soil.
