SX8383 : Wheal Exmouth, Christow

near to Coombe, Devon, Great Britain

Wheal Exmouth, Christow
Wheal Exmouth, Christow
Former Cornish beam engine house, castellated chimney base and octagonal chimney base (I'm assuming the chimneys have been shortened and probably had brick upper sections). The house is now a dwelling but still recognisably a beam engine house. The house was home to a 70" Cornish engine by J E Mare & Co from 1854-62 and the engine now survives at Prestongrange Colliery near Edinburgh. The building is decorative due to its proxmity to Lord Exmouth's house. The mine produced lead, silver and a small quantity of zinc.
