Brake van (detail) at Whitwell & Reepham railway station
This SR 272 Full Brake van once belonged to Southern railway. It was built at Lancing in 1952 and found in Sheffield.
In 1882 two railway stations opened at Reepham and Whitwell - Whitwell station, having formed part of the Norwich City to Melton Constable leg of the M&GN which ran for a total of 21.5 miles, was closed in 1959. After years of lying derelict it was acquired by the newly formed Whitwell & Reepham Railway Preservation Society Limited with the aim of restoring the station, acquiring rolling stock and to set up a museum. By September 2008 130 metres of track had been laid and with work still ongoing, the station was re-opened to the public in February 2009 on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the closure of the M&GN (Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway). From end of March onwards weekends the station is open from 10am to 6pm - with steam engine 'Annie' running every first Sunday from midday onwards.
