SK8608 : The street to Oakham Castle
Oakham, Rutland, Great Britain

The street to Oakham Castle
This is taken looking up this narrow cobbled street towards Oakham Castle. The castle was built in 1180 by Walkelin de Ferrers, a Norman baron. The only part of it that still remains is the Great Hall as the rest has been demolished. The walls inside the Great Hall are covered by over 200 horseshoes as every peer of the realm (a person who can sit in the House of Lords) who visits Oakham has to give a horseshoe. The building on the left of the street is the town Post Office. This photograph was taken on a sunny but very cold January morning at approximately 11:50am.
