St Michael's church, Brent Knoll - bench end (1)
Out of the many medieval carved bench ends at Brent Knoll church, three in particular are of special interest; together they supposedly tell the allegorical story of an avaricious abbot. Despite the absence of a definitive opinion, the popular explanation for the carvings is that the Abbot of Glastonbury of the time taxed his tenants of Brent Knoll heavily. The villagers would have dearly loved to have hanged him, but had to settle for hanging his effigy instead to show their feelings!

Here in the first of the three bench ends, Reynard the Fox is seen disguised as the mitred Abbot. Around his feet are grouped three servile monks in cowls who have the heads of swine. Victims of the fox are represented as a crane, an owl, a cock, a hen and a few geese. In the panel below two monkeys roast a pig on a spit, whilst A chained monkey in the uppermost panel holds a bag of money. LinkExternal link
