The grave of 5619912 Pte P.T.Clarke of the 4Bn Devonshire Regiment at Cruite Island Catholic Cemetery (Cill Bhride)
Pte Clarke was 17 years old. He was the son of John and Ellen Clarke, of Kentisbeare, Devon. He was part of the military guard on the ship Arandorra Star which carried over 15,000 Italian civilians from Britain to internment in Canada. It was sunk by an U-boat on the 2nd of July, 1940 some 400 miles west of Cruit Island.
Bodies from the Arandorra Star came ashore along the western coasts of Britain and Ireland from Benbecula in the north to Co Mayo in the south. Peter's body was washed ashore at Keadue Bay B7318
