River Irwell, Woden Street Bridge
Woden Street footbridge connects Ordsall with St George's Island, crossing the River Irwell round about the area where it becomes the Manchester Ship Canal. In the background is the 19th century railway viaduct which now carries the Metrolink tramway (Cornbrook Station is out of shot, to the right of the photograph).
River Irwell
The River Irwell rises on the Rossendale hills north of Bacup and flows south for 39 miles before joining the River Mersey west of Manchester. It was a very important river in the development of industry, during the Industrial revolution, in Lancashire.
