Two red-painted fireman's hatches have been built into the bridge parapets to allow the hoses easier access to the water in case of emergency.

This is the Grand Union Canal Main Line, formerly the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal (or Saltley Cut) opened in 1844 to Salford Junction, where it meets the Birmingham and Fazeley and Tame Valley Canals.
