On August 6th 1989, at West Ealing, Class 50025 Invincible, was heading at high speed to London with the 21:15 Oxford to Paddington service when it struck a section of rail, which had been deliberately laid across the track by vandals. It derailed and travelled for half a mile, ripping up track, and finally turned on its side sliding along even further. There were no fatalities, or even serious injuries, but the locomotive was written off. I'm not aware that anyone was brought to justice for this crime.
British Transport Police had two separate acts of vandalism to investigate that occurred within an hour of one another. An hour earlier another train on the same section of track had also hit a length of rail just after 9pm. Because it was at an angle the train was able to push it aside. An hour later the Oxford train, hauled by the locomotive above, hit a length of rail square on at a speed of about 80mph.
