Brooke: St Peter - interior
"The chief interest of the church lies inside," wrote Nikolaus Pevsner, "and it is very varied. There is first a Norman N arcade of three bays, dating from the mid C12. Piers circular with heavy volute capitals and square abaci. Arches with one slight chamfer. The chancel arch and the arches to the N chapel [right background] are all Elizabethan. They have round arches and mouldings without mediaeval precedent." The square font is Norman, the box pews Elizabethan. The 16th-century work at Brooke was paid for by Sir Andrew Noel, whose son's monument is in the north chapel. Other Noel descendants lie in Exton (see SK9211).
