Owston: St Andrew
Owston: St Andrew
Hemmed in by tall rees to the east, south and west, Owston church was difficult to photograph from the north and north-east in the low light of an early-October afternoon. I shall have to return one morning, or in the winter. Nikolaus Pevsner explains that St Andrews is "a fragment of the Augustinian Priory founded by Robert Grimbald before 1161." He found the building a puzzle: "The tower carries a short spire. It seems to belong to the period of c 1300. But why a tower in that position, at the NW angle of the chancel chapel? A tower at the junction of nave and chancel is highly unusual."
