Site of settlement below Green Humbleton
Site of settlement below Green Humbleton
There are traces of earthworks just below the ridge of the narrow neck of land, east of the hillfort at Green Humbleton, above Humbleton Sike. It has been interpreted as a ruined sheepfold built on the remains of a former scooped settlement LinkExternal link

There is an area of rig and furrow, the sign of former ploughing, on the ridge to its right LinkExternal link

Further scooped enclosures have been identified nearer to Humbleton Sike but are poorly preserved LinkExternal link

The view is just south of east, to the Border ridge. Eccles Cairn is on the left. Below, on the right, the path which passes to the left side of a prominent ridge is the joint line of the Pennine Way and St Cuthbert's Way. These two routes diverge at a junction further up the slope, west of the Border. St Cuthbert's Way crosses the head of the Sike to cross the Border just right of Eccles Cairn. The Stob Stones can just be made out on Stob Rig, the ridge just below the Border right of centre, and above, to the right is Whitelaw Nick which takes the line of the Border and the Pennine Way south.
