St George's church, Crowhurst
St George's church, Crowhurst
The classic view of this typical Surrey village church is this one from the south-east. The wide nave and narrower chancel can be seen along with the timber broach spire.
St George's church, Crowhurst
The church, some distance from any contemporary town or village, has ancient foundations as attested by the 4000-year old yew in the churchyard, almost certainly evidence of pre-Christian religious practices on the site. The building, listed grade 2 (list entry number 1029927), comprises a 12th century nave and south aisle, 15th century chancel and a wooden spire rebuilt after a fire in 1947.
