Wall, High Street
Wall, High Street
Hearthstone wall reputed to date from the 15th century but considered by some to be more likely to be 17th/18th century. It features galleting in many of the mortar joints - see TQ3551 : Wall, High Street for close up. Grade II listed - see LinkExternal link.
Galleting (or galletting or garnetting) is the practice of inserting small pieces of hard stone (such as ironstone or flint, depending on the region) into the mortar of a wall, generally to protect and strengthen the mortar, but sometimes for decorative effect.
