Magnificent vista south of White Law
Magnificent vista south of White Law
The Pennine Way (high route) approaching the col between White Law and Steer Rig. There is a very distinct linear earthwork in the col, made up of two almost parallel ditches separating a central bank, which runs between the heads of two tributary valleys, one flowing east to the Trowup Burn, the other running west to the Halter Burn. It is similar to many of the so-called, 'cross-dykes', in the Cheviot Hills, often associated with old track-ways. It is thought that they may have been built to control traffic along these routes, or act as boundary markers between neighbouring territories.

Just beyond the dyke, and passing through it, near the head of the valley on the English side, is the old track that contours around the east side of White Law, from Wideopen Head NT8626 : Old track near spring, east of White Law. It crosses the Border and descends on a graded course to Old Halterburnhead on the west side (right). Other old routes probably continued south along Steer Rig.

The earthwork is shown from the south side here NT8525 : Linear earthwork below White Law
