The rocks which outcrop both sides of the lower half of Llyn Padarn are part of the Pre-Cambrian Padarn ridge, the block against which the Cambrian rocks were squeezed to form slate. The Padarn ridge is characterised by large expanses of rock outcrops. The Welsh word for such a terrain is 'clegyr'.
