Old Halterburnhead
Old Halterburnhead
Old Halterburnhead was once a shepherd's cottage and said to have been left ruined after the roof was blown off in a storm. It is flanked by a copse of aged trees. There are remains of two ancient settlements in the vicinity, but it is now a lonely spot with often just the wind, sheep and nesting birds.

Alexander Jeffrey in The History & Antiquities of Roxburghshire (1864) writes:
"The foundations of many ruined houses speak of a numerous population which once inhabited the well sheltered hopes of the mountains. It is interesting to notice the close proximity of the buildings to the border line on each side, as if the inhabitants in either kingdom had always lived at peace with each other".

In 1542, Halter Burn (or Elter Burn as it was called) defined the line of the Border. Much of the land was in dispute and it can't have been an easy place to live.
