The gatehouse controlled a weak point in the castle - the entrance, where thought had to be put into every conceivable method of surprise or attack and then thwarting each with a complex of narrow causeways, portcullises, thick doors, drawbridges, arrow-loops, murder-holes or machicolations.

Today you can stroll in and pay your £4.00 adult entrance fee in a relaxed frame of mind, rebuffing the tempting offer of a guidebook / brochure at £3.75 and ignoring the tourist-tat gift shop altogether.
