Ferryland and Factoryland, Inveraray
Ferryland and Factoryland, Inveraray
A short terrace of houses with two unusual street name plates. The taller building in the foreground is 1-2 Ferryland, the lower buildings are called Factoryland.
Built in the late 18th century for the Duke of Argyll, they have separate Category A listings from Historic Scotland LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link .
According to the Inveraray-argyll website LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) , a house at Ferryland came with the job of running the ferry to St. Catherine on the opposite shore of Loch Fyne. Factoryland was built as a woollen mill, having a large workroom upstairs and housing for the workers below. The factory soon became too small, and manufacturing was moved elsewhere in the town.
