SJ8746 : Etruria Industrial Museum-Pan Room SJ9752 : Cheddleton Flint Mill - North Mill Flint Pan. Here is one of the sources which was operational in the 19th C to the 1960s. The chert here was favoured for the runners in these grinding mills. The chert is a 2-6 metre thick bed in the Monsal Dale limestone near the top of the limestone sequence. It compromised of a bed (of post diagensis origin?) made up of 90% fine quartz chert and limestone. The chert is hard so miners under cut it, propped it before removing these props. The chert would fall in blocks.
