NT2574 : Scotland Street Tunnel and Play Park

taken 17 years ago, near to Edinburgh, Scotland

Scotland Street Tunnel and Play Park.
Scotland Street Tunnel and Play Park.
The view of the tunnel entrance below Scotland Street on the former northern suburban railway line. The tunnel entrance was at the southern end of the Scotland Street Station (latterly just a goods station) and the area is now used as a play park. The building which appears above the tunnel entrance is the last block of tenements on the eastern side of Scotland Street (on the corner of Scotland Street and Summer Bank).

The tunnel entrance has been bricked up with entry only permitted by way of a locked gate. The tunnel runs directly south from this point and originally emerged at a station which was named Canal Street. That particular station no longer survives and the Waverley Market (immediately adjacent to Waverley Station) appears to occupy the site of the former station.
