Newton Park Hotel, Newton Solney
An italianate-style house built by Francis Bernasconi for Abraham Hoskins, a Burton upon Trent attorney about 1797. It was sold to the Earl of Chesterfield in 1836 and he rented it to William Worthington, a brewer from Burton, who altered and extended it. It lay empty for 8 years after William Worthington died in 1871, and then sold to another brewer, Robert Ratcliff, who again altered it. Evacuees were housed in the staff wing during the war. Ratcliffs lived there until death duties forced a sale in 1959; it was sold to a local consortium and became a hotel. It was sold to Allied Breweries and became an Embassy Hotel. In 1990 it went to Jarvis Hotels, and in late 2011 was bought by Jupiter Hotels and operates under the Mercure Brand. And very pleasant it is!
