Welbeck Colliery
Welbeck Colliery
One of the few remaining working collieries in the UK. Ladies' football on the colliery sports ground.
Welbeck Colliery
At the time of writing (late 2009), this is one of just two deep pits operational in Nottinghamshire, and was expected to cease operations in 2010 due to exhaustion of workable resources.
It was one of a number of collieries opened up in the 1920s in central Nottinghamshire as improved technology allowed the deeper seams to be exploited. The local community, Meden Vale, was built from new by the colliery company, and expanded by the National Coal Board after the Second World War and remains an excellent example of a purpose-built colliery village.

Update, May 2010
The last face ceased to be worked on May 11 2010, when it became worked out. Although there are unworked reserves in the same seam, they are separated from the Welbeck workings by a geological fault, and can be more effectively worked from the neighbouring Thoresby Colliery.
