Valley between Fernworthy and Battishill Downs
Valley between Fernworthy and Battishill Downs
This shallow valley separates the moorland of Fernworthy Down, access land from which the picture was taken, from the farmland of Battishill Down. The field boundary cutting across the photo just above the sheep is the Granite Way, and SX5186 : NCN sign on the Granite Way is theoretically visible just before the track disappears into the trees on the left.
Granite Way
The Granite Way is a 9-mile cycle route, most of it along the former railway line between Okehampton and Lydford, and opened in May 2002. It forms part of NCN27, and makes use of impressive viaducts at Meldon and Lake. The route runs along the northwest edge of the Dartmoor National Park, and the two viaducts offer views of the moor.

Until 2013, the railway route was broken near Southerly, using lanes to cross the A386. This gap was filled in late 2013.
