Callendar Park and the Antonine Wall

Part of the Antonine Wall passes through Callendar Park. It was built for Antoninus Pius across the narrow lowland part of central Scotland around 142A.D., and was 61km long, but the Romans withdrew south after about 20 years. It was a turf and clay rampart about 3.5m high on a 4m wide stone base; to the north was a V-shaped ditch about 12m wide and 4.2m deep, which was ‘mined’ with pointed stakes embedded in the ground.

The lands of the area were acquired in the 14C by the Livingston family [Earls of Linlithgow, Errol, Callendar etc.], from when the oldest part of Callendar House dates. The Livingstones forfeited the lands in 1715 as a result of the Jacobite rebellion, and they were taken over by the York Buildings Company and then sold in 1783 to William Forbes an Aberdeen coppersmith who specialised in supplying the Royal Navy. It was the Forbes family who were responsible for the 19C French Renaissance style of the house as it is seen today – it is a category A listed building and the grounds are included in a list of significant gardens and designed landscapes of Scotland.

In 1963 Falkirk Council bought the house, in disrepair, and some of the parkland. It has been restored to its Georgian state and is Falkirk’s principal museum and major heritage centre, with galleries for permanent and temporary exhibitions, and a history research centre and archive. The surrounding parkland, and woodland of Callendar Estates, is open to the public with various recreational facilities.
