Flannan Isles: the railway heads for the lighthouse
Flannan Isles: the railway heads for the lighthouse
The railway tracks, used for winching supplies up to the lighthouse before a 'Gnat' (three wheeled vehicle on rubber tyres) was introduced in the 1960s, proceed up the hill from the western landing stage at such a gradient that steps have been incorporated into the concrete housing. Here, we see it swing north away from the clifftop on its way to the lighthouse, whose tower can be seen in the background.

Before it gets there, the railway will converge with another arm leading up from the other landing stage, in the southeast corner of the island.
