Castle Crag was at one time the home of a hermit, Millican Dalton. A former office worker from Essex, Millican lived the summer in a cave on the hill. He generally wore shorts, a slouch hat with a peacock's feather and a tweed coat. Quite a colourful character by all accounts. A strict vegetarian he taught climbing and rafting to tourists and made tents and rucksacks for them. During the winter he transferred to a hut in Epping Forest. The hermit of Castle Crag finally died in 1947 aged 80 by one account.
