Beach north of Tayinloan ferry terminal, taken 5 years ago
There used to be an old pier off this beach - compare earlier Geograph photo looking in the same direction NR6946 : Old pier and new slipway, Tayinloan . It was demolished in 2012 as part of a scheme to prevent sanding up at the Tayinloan to Gigha ferry berth (see also NR6946 : Recently refurbished ferry terminal, Tayinloan ).
The improvement works included moving some 80,000 tonnes of sand from the south to the north of the ferry causeway LinkExternal link .
Seen beyond the grass is an area of densely packed paling fence - presumably this is to stabilise the transported sand.
Some aerial photos by RCAHMS show distribution of sand around the two piers in 2011 LinkExternal link .
