'Cobra Mist' building
'Cobra Mist' building
The enormous Cobra Mist building on Orford Ness. It was built in the 1960s as one of the bases for an American Air Force experimental 'over the horizon' radar system, designed to monitor Eastern European/Western Russian airspace for Soviet aircraft. However, technical problems meant that it never really worked properly, and was eventually shut down in the early 1970s. In due course the building and transmission facilities came under the operation of the BBC, broadcasting the World Service until 2011.
